Canon: Naruto
Character: Uzumaki Naruto
Timeline: The Sasuke & Sai Arc

Personality: Orphaned as a baby, Naruto lived a lonely life as a jinchūriki. The villagers of Konoha feared and detested him, choosing to avoid him and warn their children against playing with him. Naruto grew up without real understanding of why he was treated in such a way, oblivious to the secret he tried his best to get the attention he craved – often pulling pranks in an attempt to get people to recognise him, going as far as painting the Hokage monument at one point. He often dreams of becoming Hokage, with the belief that doing so would make the other villagers acknowledge and respect him.

Even after graduating from the academy – Naruto strives to be Hokage one day, and although as the series progresses, his core reasons for being Hokage change, he still keeps the same confidence and determination to meet his goal. Even though he struggles to understand key concepts and situations, he still manages to come out on top... eventually. It's possibly due to his hyperactivity, naivety, and impatience that he takes so much longer to learn, and generally when he does so it is through doing rather than listening or reading. His traits make him a difficult student, but those who train him usually come to accept that this is just the way Naruto is, and appreciate the power he has the ability to posses.

In his later years, Naruto finally begins to make connections and bonds with people, his first is with Iruka, a mentor who understood his pain of life without parents – and becomes very much like a Father to him. However, his most important bond is that which he shares with Sasuke – the first of his peers to properly acknowledge him. He sees Sasuke like a brother, and his need to maintain that bond is the driving force behind most of his actions.

There days, despite his apparent idiocy, and lack of propriety – Naruto has an incredibly serious side. He is capable of taking orders and listening to others even though he may feel that he needs to have a hand in doing something about a situation. When his friends are in trouble, he seeks to aid them – often sacrificing himself in their place. As he has grown, he has become more aware of who he is, the Kyuubi inside him, and his position in the world. He has also developed an incredible empathy, that even goes as far to stretch to people who may be classed as his enemies at first glance, like Gaara.

Background:

Naruto was born to Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, however, shortly after his birth the Kyuubi was forced to rampage by Uchiha Madara, and Minato made the decision to seal the demon into his newborn son. Naruto was made an orphan that night, and the Third Hokage decided that it would be best to keep Naruto's lineage a secret, giving him his mother's family name, and ensuring he knew nothing about his parents, or the Kyuubi within him as he grew up.

As he grew up, Naruto was resented by most of the villagers for being the host of the Kyuubi which had destroyed their home, despite Minato's request that Naruto be praised as the hero who helped defeat it – the only one who would be capable of withstanding the intensity of the Kyuubi's chakra. Due to this hate, Sarutobi prohibited anyone from telling Naruto the truth.

At the age of twelve, Naruto was properly acknowledged for the first time – by Umino Iruka. Iruka, Naruto's academy sensei was the first person to hold a conversation with him, and treat him the same as the other children. Naruto accepted him into his life as a father figure, and Iruka was a kind of protector, and often treated him to Ramen and training sessions.

Iruka went as far as to protect Naruto with his life on the day that he learnt of his true identity thanks to Mizuki, who told an incredibly naïve Naruto that he could graduate from the academy if he learnt a jutsu from a secret scroll – a scroll he actually wanted for himself. Naruto studied the scroll, and finally learnt what was to become one of his most powerful abilities, Kage Bunshin no Jutsu. Mizuki convinced the people of the village and the Hokage, that Naruto had stolen the scroll to learn it's secrets and attack the village – however Iruka, having overheard this, believed in Naruto, and ended up fighting against Mizuki to protect the boy. During the fight, Naruto learnt the reason why the villagers hated him. Despite his pain at learning he was a monster, Iruka's friendship and willing to protect him willed him to defeat Mizuki. Iruka graduated Naruto from the academy there and then.

After graduation from the academy, new shinobi are placed into three-men cells that are lead by high ranking Jounin. Naruto found himself teamed up with his long standing crush, Haruno Sakura, and rival, Uchiha Sasuke, with Hatake Kakashi as their leader. During training, Sasuke and Naruto were constant reminders of their need to get stronger. Naruto was continually annoyed by Sasuke's innate abilities, and Sasuke felt the need to make sure he was always several steps ahead of Naruto, as he began to catch up with him.

Their first real introduction to the shinobi world came when at Naruto's insistence, they were given a 'C' rank mission, which was actually falsely ranked. The mission was intended to be a simple escorting job, which ended up leaving Team 7, and Tazuna in fear for their lives. Predicting that their apparent 'defeat' of Zabuza wasn't all it seemed, Sakura, Sasuke and Naruto trained hard to become stronger – and Sasuke and Naruto's competition truly started. Naruto trained so fiercely that when the time came to escort Tazuna again, he slept in – and when he finally made it to the bridge Tazuna was building, it was to find his team mates in battle against Zabuza and Haku. Naruto immediately went to Sasuke's aid, and as a result they were both trapped in Haku's Ice Mirror Prison – and he ended up being rescued by Sasuke, who Naruto ended up believing to be dead. It was this fear that sparked Naruto's anger, and he tapped into the chakra of the Kyuubi inside him, allowing him to break the ice prison and defeat Haku.

After returning to Konoha, the team continued to complete missions – until the announcement of the Chūnin exams, a time that would change the lives of all those involved. The exams, divided into three parts began with a written test, meant to test their passion and ability to make big decisions under duress. Without understanding the meaning behind the initial exam, Naruto banked on the final question. When told that they either had to answer the question correctly, or never have the chance to take the Chūnin exam again, Naruto exclaimed that he didn't care if he never got to take the exam again and that he would become Hokage anyway he inadvertently passed – as the entire exam's purpose was to show willingness in the face of the unknown. Needless to say, he passed, alongside a record number of other students, each affected by Naruto's personality.

The second part of the exam, was a survival test. Teams were sent into the Forest of Death, each with either an Earth or Heaven scroll. Their task was to survive the duration of the test, with both a Heaven and an Earth scroll. Not long after entering the forest, Naruto's team was ambushed by Orochimaru – who disguised himself as a Genin from another hidden village, one of the three Legendary Sannin. Before Sasuke forfeited their scroll, Naruto attacked Orochimaru, who rendered the young shinobi unconscious by placing a seal on him to restrict his access to the Kyuubi's chakra. Naruto's courage inspired Sasuke to fight in the face of Orochimaru, however, he was bitten by Orochimaru and cursed. Despite this, the three escaped, and completed the task – with the help of Kabuto.

Due to the number of Genin who passed the first and second phases, preliminary matches were set up in order to reduce their number, in which Naruto fought against Kiba Inuzuka and won, putting him through to the finals. Naruto trained with Jiraiya before the finals, who released the seal that Orochimaru placed on him, and began to teach him how to use the Kyuubi's chakra for his own good, and how to control that flow.

During the final exam, Naruto was pitted against Neji, who like Kiba felt that the match would be an easy win – however, Naruto surprised and outsmarted him. The finals never ended, and during Gaara's fight with Sasuke – Konoha was invaded. During the invasion, Gaara and Naruto developed a bond borne of their similarly cursed history. Having both experienced the pain of being a jinchūriki from an early age, Naruto was able to show Gaara that he was not alone – and managed to defeat the Ichibi and temporarily break the connection between it and Gaara, Naruto managed to convince him to change his thinking.

Although Orochimaru's infiltration was unsuccessful, he successfully managed to kill the Third Hokage. The news was devastating to the village, as everyone looked up to the Third in one way or another. After the funeral, Jiraiya was asked to take the place of Hokage – however he refused the position, and was asked to find a replacement. Deciding that taking Naruto with him on his search would be incredibly useful, he promised the young Genin that he would teach him a new jutsu in exchange – and Naruto went willingly with Jiraiya to find Tsunade.

During their hunt for Tsunade, Jiraiya taught Naruto the basics of a jutsu called Rasengan, reluctantly, mostly after encountering Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki, two members of the Akatsuki who sought Naruto for the Kyuubi inside him.

Jiraiya's need for Naruto to tag along became clear when Tsunade was finally tracked down – after being asked to be Hokage, she flat out refused, claiming that the title was pointless, and a waste of time. Hearing her disgrace the title of Hokage riled Naruto up. The Hokage title was respected, and something he felt shouldn't be scoffed. Naruto, keen to prove his worth, and the title of Hokage bet with Tsunade that he was good enough to master the Rasengan within a number of days.

During their stay in that particular town, Orochimaru approached Tsunade – his arms sealed by the Third, in an attempt to make her heal him. When she refused, a battle ensued between the three Sannin, including Naruto and Kabuto. It was during this battle, that bruised, battered, and bleeding, Naruto continued to fight to protect others, and successfully completed the Jutsu he had spent weeks learning.

Tsunade came to her senses after seeing Naruto's dedication, and recognising that jutsu – she returned to Konoha and accepted the title of Hokage to become the Fifth. Naruto was incredibly proud of his achievement, and returned to look for Sasuke and show him how much he had improved. However, his rival – who had been constantly bothered by the curse from Orochimaru, had other ideas. He sought revenge on his older brother, Itachi who murdered the entire Uchiha clan, leaving only him. Despite their best efforts, Sasuke went off in search of Orochimaru. Naruto and Sasuke ended up battling to their highest ability, but when faced with the choice of killing Naruto, Sasuke left him.

Naruto was left with three years until Orochimaru would need to use Sasuke's body – and Jiraiya offered to train Naruto if he travelled with him. Seeing it was the only way forward, and the only chance he had to even come close to Sasuke's level of ability he went with Jiraiya.

Upon his return, it becomes apparent that Naruto has changed drastically. Although he is still ranked as a Genin, and maintains his somewhat immature humour, he is clearly grown mentally and physically. Keen to get a move on and rescue Sasuke, Naruto gives himself a moment to consider how others around him have moved on, too – included Gaara, who – much to his envy and utmost joy, he learns is now Kazekage. Unfortunately, his first mission is not to retrieve Sasuke, but to rescue Gaara from his captors, the Akatsuki, who are intent on extracting the Ichibi for their own use.

Naruto is determined to rescue Gaara, but despite his own improved ability, and even that of the Kyuubi within – there is nothing he can do to stop the extraction, and it transpires that Gaara is in fact, dead. Elder Chiyo, of the Sand village however, having seen the determination and will of Naruto makes the ultimate sacrifice and gives her own life in order for Gaara to continue his own. Despite the sad end, Gaara's return to the Sand Village is a happy one, and Naruto returns to Konoha with an interesting tidbit of information imparted upon Sakura by one of the members of the Akatsuki who kidnapped Gaara – Sasori.

Tsunade accepts Sakura's will to follow up on the intelligence, and Team Kakashi is reformed. This time, with Yamato – an ANBU as leader, and a new member. Sai. Immediately, Sai and Naruto do not get on well with one another – mostly due to Sai's lack of social skills. There is tension between the three of them, but when it comes to their mission, they manage to work together – at least to some extent.

With Yamato disguised as Sasori, they discover that the spy Sasori told Sakura about was actually Kabuto. However, Orochimaru makes an appearance before it is safe for them to leave, having removed a seal on Kabuto's memories that was initially put in place by Sasori. During the ensuing battle, Orochimaru causes Naruto to lose control of his chakra and the Kyuubi manages to take over. During his time as the four-tailed beast, Naruto hurts Sakura badly, and yet Orochimaru still gets away with Kabuto, and... Sai, who was on a secret mission by Danzo.

Yamato manages to track the trio using a clone, and before they arrive there, Yamato takes Naruto to the side and explains how Sakura was really hurt. The news devastates Naruto, and Yamato suggests that perhaps instead of allowing the Kyuubi to control him, to stop using the chakra, and instead use his own if he wanted to protect his friends. The team finally arrive at and manage to infiltrate Orochimaru's hideout, capturing and restraining Sai who reveals that his mission had been to organise another attack on Konoha.

They leave the hideout for safety, and Sai asks Naruto why he is bothered about Sasuke. After explaining his bond with the Uchiha, he vows to give his life to never let that bond break. Sai is taken back by the revelation, understanding what it means to have a bond with someone who is like a brother. Sai, having switched sides helps to capture Kabuto, and then scour the hideout looking for Sasuke.

Sai managed to locate Sasuke, and the rest of the team followed. Unfortunately, due to his fatigue after his fight with Orochimaru as the four-tailed beast, Naruto was unable to match Sasuke's skill – and struggled to reject the Kyuubi's will. Sasuke intervened, entering Naruto's subconscious and seeing the Kyuubi for himself, and it backed down – leaving 'Team Kakashi' worn down and at the mercy of Sasuke. However, when Sasuke goes to deal the finishing blow, Orochimaru stops him – and Sasuke, Kabuto and Orochimaru leave, allowing the team to return to Konoha.

Naruto, is deeply upset by his continued inability to retrieve Sasuke, and is determined to continue his training to be able to bring him back to Konoha. It is at Kakashi's hospital bed, that the Jounin explains there is a way for Naruto to get stronger.

Abilities/Additional Notes:

Naruto is a ninja, which enables him to use ninjutsu. Including:

Kage Bunshin: The ability to make exact replicas of himself. As Naruto had an incredibly high chakra he is able to make a vast number of clones without needing to worry about fatigue. He often uses this ability to overwhelm his opponents.

Rasengan: An ability taught to him by Jiraiya, which was a signature move of the Fourth Hokage's. This is a ball of concentrated chakra which Naruto generally summons a shadow clone to create. It is capable of grinding into whatever it hits, and cause mass damage to it's target.

Naruto is also a jinchūriki, which means he is host to the Kyuubi. Usually in times of anger, or desperation he can use the Kyuubi's chakra to increase his level of power. At the moment, he is working to suppress the Kyuubi's power over him, and resists it's willpower.
